At The Willows, we have designed our curriculum so that all learners will have mathematical skills to succeed in life. We strive to create a love of maths at where our learners embrace enjoyment, interest and a ‘can do’ attitude through our growth mindset approach. We are adopting a mastery curriculum for the teaching of mathematics which is underpinned by the drive for deep learning and achievement for all our learners. Following the White Rose curriculum, we provide our children with carefully sequenced steps which equip them with the knowledge and skills they need for future learning. We aim to create independent mathematicians who are well equipped to apply their learning to the wider world. Key features of our Maths Mastery curriculum: · High expectations for every child · Enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning · Fluency in mathematics · Number sense and place value come first · An ability to use and apply maths across the curriculum and in real life · Practical approach – objects and pictures before numbers and letters · Problem solving is central · Calculate with confidence– understand why it works Mathematics Mastery places emphasis on the cumulative mastery of essential knowledge and skills in mathematics. It embeds a deeper understanding of maths by utilising a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach so that pupils understand what they are doing rather than just learning to repeat routines without grasping what is happening.
