At The Willows Primary School, we are a diverse school community and we want our children to develop a respect for other beliefs and religions, and appreciate and celebrate the diverse world in which they live.
Through Religious Education, we promote tolerance and empathy, preparing children to be future citizens of a cohesive society. Children are engaged in asking, discussing and responding to significant human questions which religion and worldviews address, developing the understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise varied responses to these questions, as well as forming opinions of their own.
Our Religious Education curriculum is based on the expectation of the Stoke-on-Trent agreed syllabus, and is designed to ensure progress and develop interest in our pupils. We focus on four main religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Hinduism, as well as looking at the Humanist approach, and teaching enables children to:
*know about and understand a range of religions and worldviews
*express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and worldviews
*gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and worldviews.
We foster relationships with local faith communities, and these enrich pupils’ experiences in RE. We strive to cultivate and maintain these relationships through regular visits and communication; each year group visits a local place of worship every year, so that by the time pupils come to the end of their learning journey at The Willows, they will have visited St. Thomas’ Church, Penkhull; Stoke-on-Trent Synagogue, Newcastle; City Central Mosque, Hanley; The Light Church, Penkhull, and the Hindu Temple, Northwood.
