At The Willows, we recognise that reading, writing and spoken language are interlinked and by skilfully combining these components gives pupils the best possible chance to be successful in English.

We pride ourselves in offering high-quality immersion in genres that enable pupils to acquire knowledge, scaffold their learning and to build on what they already know.

Through the English curriculum children will:

  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  • use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
  • See themselves as real writers!  We want the next generation of David Walliams, JK Rowlings etc to come from The Willows!

Writing is a part of everything a child does in school. Our whole school curriculum depends on pupils being able to write. Teachers ensure children have every opportunity to achieve this goal.

We recognise that all of our pupils sometimes need support in their learning. Our Teachers, Teaching Assistants and specialist SEN support staff take into account the wealth of factors that can influence the way a young person learns to write and make adaptations to lessons and activities as needed.

We are an inclusive community and understanding the neurodiversity and physical needs of our pupils is at the heart of our practice. All pupils will have an equality of access to a broad and balanced English curriculum irrespective of gender, ethnicity or special educational needs.

Our writing curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that NC objectives are covered (and revisited) to ensure that substantive and disciplinary knowledge is embedded and enhanced.
