At The Willows Primary School, we are Historians!
We want our children to be curious, ask questions, and be investigators. Through studying history, we develop an understanding of how Britain and the wider world has changed through time. We learn about our local story and how it has been impacted upon by the changing national story and world events. We find out about the interesting history of our school site and its connection to the Spode factory. This allows the children to develop an understanding of their unique identity as children from The Potteries.
We are excited about the past. As we travel through time, we develop an understanding of chronology and how periods and ideas are connected. We investigate significant events including the Great Fire of London and the Titanic disaster. We find out about significant individuals and how they impact on the world around them. We learn about civilisations: the Ancient Greeks, the Roman Empire, the Ancient Egyptians and the development of the Islamic civilisation. We trace how Britain changes and advancements are made from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We investigate how settlers of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings shape Britain. We explore how World War II was a turning point and the more recent impact of Wind Rush.
Through studying history, children are encouraged to ask insightful questions, think critically, consider evidence and investigate answers. Children can use these skills to grow up to be journalists, researchers, archaeologists, museum archivists and more.
